The Cheviot Flock
Welcoming a new chapter to Nether Glenny Farm
The Cheviot Flock - A breed shaped by history
In 1791, Sir John Sinclair, one of the most influential figures in the history of agricultural improvement, set out to strengthen Scotland’s sheep stock. He travelled to the rugged Cheviot Hills in the Scottish Borders and returned with five hundred hardy hill ewes. These resilient animals adapted so well to their northern home that they were named after their place of origin — the Cheviots.
More than two centuries later, that history is echoing once again on our own hillside farm.
A new arrival in spring 2026
In spring 2026, we will welcome our own small flock of Cheviot sheep to Nether Glenny Farm. Glen, our handsome Cheviot tup, has already arrived and is settling in beautifully. Until the rest of the flock joins him, he has taken on the rather noble role of keeping Larry, our much-loved older pet sheep, company.
Visitors may already have met Glen and Larry during their time on the farm, where they are known for enjoying apples, carrots and the occasional head scratch.
Why Cheviots suit our land
Cheviot sheep are hardy, adaptable and particularly well suited to rolling grassy hills and open upland landscapes. Our farm provides exactly the kind of environment where they thrive.
We will begin with three ewes arriving already in lamb, along with two gimmers. A fenced area beside the barn is being prepared to allow easy access during lambing, feeding and daily care. This close contact helps the sheep grow calm and confident around people, much like Larry and Glen, who are already comfortable with gentle handling and attention.
Part of life on a working farm
The arrival of the Cheviot flock marks another step in the evolution of Nether Glenny Farm as a working upland farm shaped by animals, land and seasonal rhythms.
As always, our approach is small-scale and thoughtful, allowing animals to grow naturally and comfortably within the landscape rather than forcing systems onto it.
Coos, Ewes and Views
With the arrival of the Cheviots, our Coos & Views experience will soon expand into Coos, Ewes and Views. Visitors will have the chance to meet and hand-feed not only our iconic Highland cattle, but also our growing Cheviot flock, adding a new layer to the farm experience.
For now, guests can meet Glen and Larry and enjoy spending time with them during their visit. With lambs on the horizon, there is even more to look forward to in the seasons ahead.
Looking ahead
The Cheviot flock represents both a link to Scotland’s agricultural past and an exciting step forward for Nether Glenny Farm. We look forward to sharing this next chapter with returning guests and new visitors alike.
