Our Highland Fold
The cattle at the heart of Nether Glenny Farm
At Nether Glenny Farm, our Highland cattle are at the centre of everything we do. We raise a small fold of pure Highland cattle, one of Scotland’s most iconic native breeds, producing premium grass-fed beef through a slow, low-impact approach to farming.
Our fold is more than just a group of cows. It is a close-knit family, with each animal having its own personality, history, and place within the herd.
Meet the fold
Big Red was the very first cow we brought home in 2016 and remains the undisputed boss of the fold. Her eleven-year-old calf, Storm, is beginning to step into that leadership role, while Storm’s own calf, Shadow, is a beautiful young heifer who will stay at Nether Glenny and, in time, produce calves of her own.
Caramel is calm, gentle and wonderfully sensitive, a devoted mum to her young heifer calf, who is still waiting to be named. Our younger cows, Tufty and Stumpy, are strong, full of character and happily settling into their places within the fold. And then there is Bella, whose sweet nature and striking looks make her a favourite for gentle strokes.
Each member of the herd has a story, and together they form the heart and soul of Nether Glenny Farm. Whether you are visiting the farm or following our journey from afar, their character and presence are impossible to miss.
The land they live on
Our 84-acre hillside farm sits within Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, around 200 metres above sea level on the historic Highland Fault Line. High rainfall, fresh mountain air and rugged terrain shape the landscape here, creating ideal conditions for Highland cattle.
Exceptionally hardy and well-adapted to outdoor living, Highland cattle thrive in environments where other breeds would struggle. Living outdoors year-round, they move naturally across the land, making them well-suited to sustainable, low-impact farming.
Farming Highland cattle with care
Because Highland cattle thrive without intensive systems, they naturally produce high-quality, lean, well-marbled beef. Highland beef is valued for its tenderness, rich flavour and nutritional benefits, offering lower fat and cholesterol levels alongside higher protein and iron content than many other beef breeds.
Our cattle are sired by Eoin, a registered Highland bull from Wood Neuk Farm, who joins the fold for breeding cycles. A striking but gentle animal, Eoin is well accustomed to people and carefully cared for by his owners. He is due to return to Nether Glenny in June 2026.
Provenance, welfare and looking ahead
We know that many people want to understand where their food comes from, how animals are raised, and the care that goes into producing high-quality beef. That belief sits at the heart of how we farm.
Our cattle graze on grass throughout the summer and are fed grass and silage in winter. They are allowed to grow slowly and naturally, supported by attentive husbandry and a calm, healthy herd structure.
From 2027, in line with our slow-growth farming philosophy, our Dine-In menu will begin featuring dishes made with our own beef. We also plan to offer a small number of beef boxes directly from the farm. By keeping production local and small-scale, we can offer beef that is fully traceable, raised with care and true to the land it comes from.
Meet the cows in person
Visitors can meet our Highland cattle as part of the Coos & Views farm experience, where we share the stories behind the fold and how they shape life at Nether Glenny Farm.
